Constructive Credit
Effective credit is used to determine rank and class based on prior service and advance degrees. The purpose of constructive credits is to provide grade and appointment of rank comparability for persons deputed after obtaining advanced education, training or experience relative to a gimmicky who began commissioned service immediately after obtaining a baccalaureates degree.
Federal Law
10 U.S. Code § 532: Original appointments as deputed officers may exist given to individuals who possess special qualifications equally prescribed past the Service Secretaries.
Original appointments in the medical and dental specialties may be made in grades O2 to O6.
10 U.South. Code § 533: Upon receiving an original date in the Armed Forces, each officer shall be credited with prior active commissioned service (other than service as a commissioned warrant officeholder) in any military, NOAA, or the Public Health Service that was complete prior to the engagement.
Under SECDEF regulation, each appointed officer gains effective credit for training, education, and experience in the following ways:

DoD Policy
DODI 1312.03:ASD for Manpower and Reserve Affairs develops, establishes, maintains and oversees policies involving service credit determination in a way that is consequent with 10 USC § 533 and § 12207. Service secretaries ensure compliance with this Pedagogy, that persons are awarded constructive service credit proportional to the advanced pedagogy, training, and feel obtained, and recommend changes to the Didactics to the USD (P&R).
The number of years creditable equally constructive service credit may not exceed the following:
- Chaplains and JAG Officers: Entry grade credit shall not exceed 3 years. Constructive credit awarded may non result in an engagement almost the O-3 grade.
- 1 yr of constructive service credit will be awarded for each yr of graduate level education to persons appointed, designated, or assigned in an officer category that requires such advanced education or an advanced degree as a prerequisite for appointment. DODI 6000.13: Effective credit is awarded as follows:

- Credit for master's and doctorate degrees in a health profession other than those listed above may be awarded based on actual full-time equivalent education of upward to 2 years for a principal'due south degree and upwardly to 4 years for a doctorate degree.
- Yr-for-year credit or (or solar day-for-day if less than a twelvemonth in elapsing) for successful completion of a residency, internship, or fellowship required by the Service.

Army Policy
AD 2019-27: Establishes policy for the direct appointment of officers up to the class of colonel in areas of concentration other than special branches. Constructive credit is awarded pursuant to 10 U.S. Code § 533 and x U.Due south. Lawmaking § 12207.
AR 135-101: Contains tables list the amount of constructive credit to exist awarded to Medical, Dental, Medical Service, Veterinarian, Nurse, and Medical Specialist Corps officers. Navy Policy
In general, for each year of previous service with the military machine in a chapters relevant to the appointment, the appointee is credited with one yr of constructive credit. Marine Corps Policy
P1400.31C:
